Have you ever thought of volunteering to help other carers?

Perhaps you were a carer yourself, or you have carers in your family and you know how hard it can be?

If you might like to do some volunteering – just a few hours a week – why not help at one of our drop-in Carer Hubs that take place across Surrey? We are starting to build a wonderful team of people, but are still looking for more.

It’s a really rewarding role. You would be carrying out straight-forward tasks, like welcoming carers, handing out leaflets, setting up for events, making tea, etc. It’s also a very sociable role. And we provide all our volunteers with a full induction, training and ongoing support. Naturally, we  don’t want our volunteers to be out of pocket, so we reimburse expenses such as travel.

Volunteering improves my confidence in being around other people, which has taken a shattering after my very isolated life of being a carer. In addition, I get practical tips for my own situation as well.

Hear about Ashu’s experience

Hear from one of our new volunteers, Ashu, who is helping out in one of our Hubs, about how she’s finding her new role:

“I was thinking about volunteering, when I met Jacqui Maclean who informed me about the volunteering opportunity and I jumped at the chance! It gets me out of house and makes me feel useful to society.

I have been a carer for almost half of my life, which has been very isolating. Volunteering at the ACS Hub gives me the opportunity to see and hear people in  situations similar to mine, and sometimes in worse situations, and help them a bit (not by giving advice, but just by listening and offering a cuppa). It improves my confidence in being around other people, which has taken a shattering after my very isolated life of being a carer. In addition, I get practical tips for my own situation as well.

I would say that  it’s a very fulfilling experience. Give it a try for a week or two, if you don’t like it, you can always stop. The support given by Barbara and all the staff  is phenomenal. I am advised clearly on what to do, and supported at every step.

Staff are very prompt at responding to any queries. I have been provided with some really useful trainings like Manual Handling, Food hygiene and Safeguarding vulnerable adults training free of charge! Which will be useful to me when I decide to go into paid work. Overall the experience at ACS has been very positive and I hope to continue it for as long as possible.”
